Although papers on the use of AI by patients and the public are starting to emerge, we believe this is the first theme issue in a medical journal that is dedicated to the topic. Across health care, AI tools vary in their capabilities and stage of adoption (eg, to analyze data or optimize workflows) [8]. LLMs currently evaluate x-rays and images and enhance radiologists’ diagnostic accuracy. AI is even in operating rooms, helping surgeons with the use of robotics during procedures.
